Understanding Anxiety: When Your Alarm System Works Overtime

Anxiety is, at its core, a protection system. It exists to detect threat and prepare your body to respond. The problem is not that you have anxiety, it is that the alarm sometimes starts ringing for emails, conversations, or the simple uncertainty of the future.
When anxiety becomes constant, many people begin to fight it: they distract themselves (which can be helpful for immediate relief), avoid situations, or criticize themselves for feeling it. Paradoxically, fighting anxiety often feeds it. What tends to help more is learning to notice it, name it, and understand what it is trying to protect you from.
In therapy, anxiety is approached with curiosity rather than judgment. Where did this alarm learn to be so sensitive? What does it need in order to rest? These questions open a path that self criticism never does.
If anxiety is limiting your life, your sleep, your relationships, your decisions, working with a therapist can help you relate to it differently. Change is possible, though it is a process, not a switch.
